Stairlifts are perfect for people that have lesser mobility since stairlifts can help them go up and down stairs. People with disabilities making them unable to walk up and down stairs can benefit significantly from a stairlift. As with all other types of stairlifts, they come with a seatbelt for added safety and security when in use.
The team at Domestic Lift Services have written an informative guide featured below. It takes a look at the assortment of stairlifts that we have on offer. We want our customers to be informed so you are able to make a fair decision. Deciding on a stairlift can be difficult enough without a push salesperson pressuring you. Stairlifts are designed to help those that have impaired/limited mobility. Stairs can be a huge struggle for those who aren’t very mobile, making it ideal for people who are suffering from a health condition. People who suffer from arthritis or another type of bone condition and have gone through major surgery can also benefit from a stairlift. There are also people who have injured themselves which reduces their strength, flexibility & mobility. These people can also make use of a stairlift as it eases the effort they use just trying to navigate the stairs.
If you live in a home that has multiple floors, stairlifts can give you the freedom to move around in your home freely. Stairlifts allow you to access your entire home which is usually a daunting thought when you have difficulty walking.
If you’re still stuck on deciding whether or not you need a stairlift, an occupational therapist can assess you. They will be able to decide whether or not you would benefit from a stairlift in your home. Speaking with your GP would be the first step, as they can refer you to an OT.
The straight stairlift is the most common types of stairlift, designed to fit onto a set of stairs that have no curve or bend. Most residential properties are going to have straight stairs which is what makes the straight stairlift the most common form. Straight stairlifts can be built into almost any staircase, regardless of how narrow or steep your stairs are.
Curved stairlifts are an ideal solution for those who are looking to fit their curved or bent stairs with a stairlift. These stairlifts can be made to match the curve or bend of your stairs. Domestic Lift Services work to custom fit your staircase perfectly, giving you a bespoke fit.
Whether you have stairs with a corner, landing or spiral, curved stairlifts from DLSL are an ideal solution to keep you mobile and independent. Domestic Lift Services help people retain their independence in their homes by installing and maintaining curved stairlifts quickly and reliably.
Reconditioned stairlifts are something you should consider if you are looking for a reliable stairlift at a lower price point. The term reconditioned may put you off as you think of it as second hand. Reconditioned stairlifts from a reputable provider like Domestic Lift Services are serviced to a manufacturer level. This ensures that they are as good as when they left the factory. Our reconditioning process is stringent and rigorous, using manufacturer grading to ensure quality. We want to ensure that our reconditioned stairlifts are ready to be used.
All reconditioned stairlifts that we supply have also undergone full safety checks to make sure they work as they should with guarantees. Any parts that have shown wear and tear have been repaired or replaced.
Domestic Lifts also offers a used stairlift buyback scheme for those looking to get rid of unwanted stairlifts. Dependant on the age, model and make, we scout the stairlifts making sure you are given a fair price for your unwanted stairlift! We also remove and transport the stairlift for you, so you don’t have to waste time dismantling the stairlift.
If you’re in a position where you’re unable to use a conventional stairlift or need a way of transporting a wheelchair up and down the stairs, then a through the floor lift may be the best lift solution for you. A common misconception is that a through the floor stairlift is too big for a regular sized home, but this is often not the case. Many of our customers are surprised when they find out they are eligible for a through floor lift.
With so many stairlift dealers across Reading, it’s not always easy to discern who is proper and who’s out to make quick money from vulnerable people. With stairlifts being such an important aid for those who need them, it’s vital that the people who need a stairlift get them from a dealer who’s not reliable, authorised & professional. Too many private sellers are out to undercut businesses who actually care & provide a respectful service. You may have the temptation of buying with a private seller but there are disadvantages to this. You may be thinking that you’re saving money but in the long run, an unauthorised dealer of stairlifts is a false economy.
Most people who make use of a stairlift in their home are going to have it for the foreseeable future, is an aid for those who need them in their homes. For this reason, it’s a sound assumption that the stairlift will stay in their homes for at least a few years. Because of this, stairlifts are going to have to be maintained & serviced in order to uphold proper function of the stairlift.
DLSL suggest annual services to make sure that you’re stairlift is operating properly throughout the year. This may sound like a random point, but we bring this up because private sellers don’t often offer services since they are often a one-man band that sells used or broken stairlifts that haven’t been reconditioned to a fit state for resale. Because of this, many households that have a stairlift that has been bought from dodgy dealers have been left with a broken stairlift that is beyond repair or service.
Now there are authorised dealers who sell used stairlifts, as we at DLSL offer used stairlifts to all our customers. However, the difference is that our used stairlifts have been reconditioned to factory level specifications and standards making sure that the stairlift is in as good of a condition as if it had just left the showroom floor. Reconditioned stairlifts are a great way of saving some money but only if you know where the stairlift has come from. DLSL will only acquire used stairlifts given a reliable service history & superb overall condition since we don’t want to sell faulty goods to our trusted customers.
It’s things like checking the condition of used stairlifts that only come with using an authorised dealer since they’re held to high standards by brands, manufacturers & regulatory boards that will make sure the company in question takes these fundamental responsibilities seriously, and actions them in there day to day processes. DLSL are TSI & ELECSA approved, as well as regulated by Constructiononline which means we are held to the highest standards when it comes to providing & installing stairlifts. With a history stretching back 15+ years, Domestic Lift Services have helped thousands of families regain their independence. We provide ongoing support for numerous Local Authority clients. Whether you need a straightforward stairlift, a reliable hoist, or a simple shower chair, DLSL can provide and install it.
Stairlifts are complex systems to build, install & service correctly, and when it comes to installation & servicing, you really wouldn’t want to trust a novice to carry out your stairlift installation or service. Think about it like this, would you trust a complete novice to service your that you’ve paid for? If the answers no then you should be thinking the same thing about your stairlift since it takes experience and knowledge to provide a quality service.
Authorised dealers also have an advantage over private sellers, since authorised dealers will often have good connections with brands & manufacturers meaning and parts they may need for repairs or service are easy to get a hold of. Private dealers will be buying parts online which makes your bill much more expensive as they will often charge you profit on top of what is already an expensive part, as well as the labour to fix it. An authorised dealer will have a wide range of parts for all models that they service, meaning any repairs or service carried out on your stairlift will be quick & stress-free.
Like with any piece of equipment, it’s important to know how to take care of your stairlift. You must ensure you’re keeping it in good condition. Stairlifts that are neglected are prone to wearing easier, as well as ageing much faster than one that is taken care of properly. Today, Domestic Lift Services helps you by giving you a few tips on how to take care of your stairlift, from everyday considerations to deeper maintenance & cleaning advice so you can learn how to care for your new/reconditioned stairlift.
Stairlifts, like any other part of the home, need to be cleaned regularly. The tracks may have to be cleaned by a more able-bodied family member. The seat, however, can be cleaned following standard household cleaning tips. The stairlifts that we offer are incredibly robust & versatile. It doesn’t hurt to look after them though!
Any indoor stairlifts can be given a quick dust once a week to stop any dust from building up. You can also use a damp cloth to clean dust that has collected on the top, sides or under the seat. During cleaning, the stairlift should always be at the bottom of the stairs. Ensure this happens to avoid any mishaps, trips or falls.
Whoever is cleaning the stairlift must not use cleaning solvents on the chair or rail. Anything that’s designed for the kitchen, bathroom or elsewhere is not meant for a stairlift. The abrasive cleaners from these cleaning solvents can seep into the electronics of the stairlift, ruining circuit boards & other intricate components. Cleaning solvents can also damage the chair, carriage as well as the tracks. This can cause the track roller to lose friction whilst it’s working which can cause skids, slips & falls. The brakes on the system will stop the lift, however, it isn’t how the system is meant to be operated.
Lubricating a stairlift track is a good pre-measure for any stairlift, as it makes sure things are literally running smoothly. This isn’t a task that people with joint pain as tracks can be quite fiddly. If you suffer from finger joint pain then someone else may have to do this step for you. You must remember to turn off your stairlift before you start lubricating the stairlift for safety reasons. Aim to lubricate the stairlift track every few months, with a thorough clean followed by a small amount of lube.
Dust and other debris can collect on the track, making it essential to clean & take care of. Most lubricants are tacky so they can gum up and bind dirt together if applied on an uncleaned track. It’s important to not over lube the slide as too much lubricant will again, bind up and gum the track. This can also cause the stairlift roller to slide uncontrollably rather than grip & roll. You must also be careful to avoid lubricating the chain as some oils contain distillates & other chemicals which can degrade rubber to the point the chain will crumble and snap
We do not recommend lubricant sprays like WD40 or 3in1 for your stairlift as these sprays contain petroleum. Petroleum will eat away at the rubber components of your stairlift. The best lubricants are made from a silicone base, which actually helps the rubber components & any other seals in the system. Silicone lubricant doesn’t contain any harmful distillates. A small amount sprays on the track every few months will be enough to keep your stairlift well lubricated.
